Sally Silver is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She developed a unique painting process utilizing syringes as a texturizing paintbrush by injecting oil paint into insulation foam. The texturized portions of her works are the result of a process, wherein, she fills syringes with oil paint and injects it into the malleable surface of the insulation foam. Through meticulous repeated injections, she renders haunting figures inspired by childhood photos.
Silver’s work is influenced by her family's struggles with heroin and meth abuse. Her process is a direct representation of syringe drug use, with each point of paint representing the harm of each drug injection that she witnessed. The focus on childhood images represents both the damage these substances have caused on her own family members and serves to bring humanity to our perception of addicts within America. The children portrayed using syringes are a reminder that every person struggling with addiction has once carried an innocence and is a victim of a drug epidemic, not a harmful actor.
